Embracing Everyday CookingSharing a meal around the table. It is a daily event that occurs across cultures and countries. To share food with another is a way to share a piece of your culture. Food is especially important during pregnancy. So much of baby’s growth is tied to the nutrients that the mother eats. Embrace’s mission is to support, advocate for and educate refugees throughout the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. On this journey of supporting and educating mothers we also build friendships and share our journey through motherhood. We want to welcome these women into America well. But, so often, we have found that they are the ones to welcome us into their homes and hearts in such a beautiful way. Most of the time, this is through sharing a meal. When we asked some of these women to share a dish that is important to them we heard so many delightful stories. Some women had learned to make the dish as children, many from their own mothers. They shared recipes that their own families loved and asked for on a daily basis. When we all met to photograph the dishes it ended with an impromptu feast with all the women trying each others’ dishes and nodding approvingly as they tried new foods. We hope this cookbook leads you on a journey of trying new foods and that you have a better understanding of the places and women that shared them.
