Ghenet Besera, MPH, PhD candidate

Ghenet Besera is a PhD student in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health. As a daughter of refugees, Ghenet feels a deep connection to the refugee community and understands the many challenges they face. She has been a volunteer with Embrace since 2013 and prior to that, she provided support to pregnant refugee women in the Washington, DC area. Ghenet has a strong interest in reproductive health both domestically and globally, and has several years of experience working in both the nonprofit and federal sector. She graduated with her Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Global Health from the George Washington University in 2013 and prior to that obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion and Education from the University of Cincinnati.


Elizabeth (Liz) Mosley, PhD, MPH

Elizabeth (Liz) Mosley is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Georgia State University School of Public Health and a full spectrum doula. She was born and raised in Georgia, then did her undergraduate and MPH studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel-Hill, her PhD at the University of Michigan, and her postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University with the Center for Reproductive Health Research in the Southeast (RISE). In 2010, she was trained as a doula by UNC BirthPartners and DONA International; since then she has volunteered as a doula for women who cannot afford one. As a researcher-advocate, Liz uses community-engaged methods to investigate how social determinants (including gender, racial/ethnic, and economic inequality) affect sexual and reproductive health in the US and globally. She lived and worked in Uganda as a maternal-child health fellow at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation with Global Health Corps, and conducted her dissertation fieldwork in South Africa. Since moving back to Georgia in 2018, Liz has volunteered with Embrace Refugee Birth Support. She also serves on the Morehouse School of Medicine’s Center for Maternal Health Equity Steering Committee and the Georgia Doula Access Working Group with Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia. Liz lives in Atlanta with her partner, Joanna, and their cat, Tybee; she loves exploring the outdoors, cooking, practicing yoga, and spending quality time with family.


Katherine Clay, ​
​M.A. International Administration

Prior to moving to Atlanta, Katherine spent two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana, Africa working with orphans and vulnerable children in the town of Ghanzi. Her focus was on building the administrative and fund-raising capacity of the local organization she partnered with. After her tour ended Katherine moved to Washington DC and worked at both the Department of Education and Department of State. Currently, Katherine is an auditor with the Office of Veteran Affairs, Office of Inspector General. Katherine first became interested in volunteering within the refugee community when she began visiting Elmira, a Meskhetian Turk women in 2007. She will never forget the fun she had at Elmira's youngest sons first birthday party. Katherine continues to enjoy the vibrancy of cultures found in Clarkston, and enjoys seeing the transformative work Embrace does.


Jennifer Mathew, MD

Dr. Jennifer Mathew is a family physician with a passion for empowering others to achieve healthier lives through education and by addressing health inequities in vulnerable communities. Currently Jennifer serves as Chief Medical Officer for Giving Health, a non-profit delivering free telehealth to the insured, and a member of Georgia’s Charitable Care Network (GCCN). She also volunteers at Good Samaritan Health Center in downtown Atlanta and works part-time as a VPC (virtual primary care provider) for MD Live, Inc.  Jennifer is the daughter of Indian immigrants and was born and raised in New York. She graduated from Cornell University, attended medical school at SUNY Stony Brook University, then completed her residency as chief resident at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Her husband, Dr. John Lewis, is an emergency physician at Emory and together with their 3 children, have been living in Atlanta since 2017.  In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys cooking and feeding others Indian food, as well as playing tennis and hiking outdoors.


Esther Kim, MD

Esther Kim is a board certified Family Medicine physician and Co-founder of Ethne Health, a non-profit community clinic in Clarkston, GA. She completed her Family Medicine residency and Obstetrics Fellowship in Memphis TN. Prior to Clarkston GA, Esther and her husband had the opportunity to serve in inner-city Memphis as well as overseas on medical missions. They hope to bring creative solutions to health care disparities in under-resourced communities.  A few of her passions include women's health, nutrition, and refugee and immigrant health. She loves to hike and play music with her family. ​
