Embrace Refugee Birth

Embrace Volunteer Descriptions

Have more questions about volunteering?
Below is a more detailed description of our volunteer opportunities.

Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum Support

Our goal in pairing volunteers with refugee and immigrant mothers is most of all to create mutual friendships. Volunteers who are paired with refugee and immigrant mothers often help with one or more the following tasks throughout her pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience:

Doctor’s Appointments-Allow 3-4 hours for these appointments. Pick up mother and transport her to her doctor’s appointment and advocate for her (ensure her questions are answered and that she is provided with interpretation). Possibly help with follow up things after the appointment such as prescription pick up or scheduling upcoming appointments.

Labor Support- (12-24hrs) Meeting the laboring mother at the hospital and providing support to her during the labor, birth and up to 2hrs postpartum.

Postpartum Support- (30min-3hr) Visit mom and new baby at home. Putting eyes on mom and baby, ask how they are doing, ask if she has any concerns (baby, breastfeeding, postpartum health/mental health), ask about baby’s pediatric appointment (help schedule and transport if needed). Contact Embrace if she/baby have any needs we need to address.

Delivering Goods- (1hr) Just as it sounds, dropping off new baby items to families.  This might be a bed, carseat, diapers, etc… The materials will be provided by Embrace we just sometimes need someone who is willing to deliver them to the new family.

On call support

Do you have a tight schedule and can't commit to long-term support? Be on our on call list!

General On Call Calendar-
The on call calendar is used when a volunteer who is paired with a mom  is not available and we are looking for someone to fill in the gap, a one-time opportunity.
This is a great opportunity for volunteers who have an unpredictable or busy schedules but would like to be alerted when a need arises.  Volunteers sign up for shifts to be on call for one or more of the following needs: Labor Support, Doctor’s Appointment, Postpartum Support, Deliver Baby Items to new parents.

Classes and Mom's Circle

We often need help with our classes (4hr) and Mom’s Circle (2hr):
            - providing snack
            - greeting moms as they arrive
            - carpool (transport moms to and from class)
            - set up/clean up
            - provide craft or activity for Mom’s Circle (30-
            45mins)
            - taking pictures
