Embrace AmeriCorps Health Education Coordinator
Background:
Embrace Refugee Birth Support is a program of Friends of Refugees, which is a 501c3 non-profit. The vision of FOR is to see, “Refugees experiencing abundant life in flourishing communities” and the mission is, “To Empower refugees through opportunities that provide for their well-being, education and employment”. At Embrace our mission is to support, advocate for and educate refugees throughout the pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience. Our vision is to empower and train refugee women to serve as educators, community liaisons and labor support within their ethnic communities.
Scope of Work:
The Americorps intern will primarily be a Health Education Coordinator for our Healthy Moms birth education class. This person will coordinate all volunteers assisting with class, assist with client registration, hospital tours, and all classroom related needs. The coordinator will also be responsible for assisting with baby showers at the end of each class series which will include organizing volunteers through community outreach. This position also helps to fill in with OB appointments, medicaid applications, and other direct client support when needed. Occasional help with social media posts, newsletter writing, and assisting with fundraising campaigns.
Requirements:
This position is 20 hours/week or 900 hours over the course of the year. The Health Education Coordinator will need to have a car for this position and be comfortable driving clients (and sometimes their children) to and from class/appointments. This person should also be comfortable with different cultures and practices. Availability during the weekdays is a must as classes run from 10-noon on Monday, Tue, Thur, and Friday. During the summer, our schedule changes and we do not have classes. During this time, we will need assistance filling in for appointments and other possible direct client support.

Responsibilities:
- Send weekly email to volunteers on class sign-up sheet detailing instructions and norms for snacks and rides
- Coordinate rides to and from class with cultural liaisons (teachers), communicating this info to volunteers
- Coordinate snack drop-off with volunteers
- Assist with rides and snacks when necessary
- Assist with childcare during classes when necessary
- Assist with baby showers and hospital tours
- Assist with registration days, utilizing cross cultural, listening, and interviewing skills
- Coordinate in-kind donations with community organizations for baby shower gifts
- Assist with transportation, advocacy, and education with OB and hospital appointments when needed
- Weekly staff meetings for communication, program improvement, and mutual encouragement across Embrace and FOR staff
- Monthly or bi-weekly check in with the Embrace Assistant Director for accountability, support, and communication.
Other possible project/opportunities:
- Assist with expansion of postpartum care program, including creating a mom’s circle/peer support space
- Assist with development and cultural adaptation of postpartum depression scale screen
- Monitor an evaluation of Embrace program
- Pairing with a refugee mom for labor and birth support
- Assist in finalizing Embrace Healthy Moms Curriculum and help shape an incentive program
